I waited until Monday morning, after I dropped the kids off at school before making the trip to my P.O. box. Then I waited until today to open a precious package. It took all of my will-power to wait this long.
I knew exactly what was waiting for me when I got back from vacation, and it was killing me. It was something very special that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. Something so damned awesome that I actually considered calling a family member to run to the post office to retrieve it for me, just so that it would be on my desk the second I walked through my office door. But I held back. You know how absence makes the heart grow fonder? Well, I savored the idea of making that trip to the post office myself. When I finally got there Monday morning, I relished the tinny twist as the key turned in lock of the door marked #2962. When that metal barrier opened I found another key. A parcel key. It was like I had won a prize from the UK.
Now, anyone who uses a P.O. box knows what I’m talking about. There’s a certain thrill you get when you see a parcel key. All the junk mail beneath it instantly catches fire (in our minds, of course) because nothing else in that box is as important as that parcel key lying there… waiting. This sort of treasure hunt retrieval process heightens the senses, we smile like fools as we then follow that seemingly mystical key to its corresponding magic portal.
