The Carnalarium by Rose Caraway

 Usually I write stories featuring characters who find one crazy way or other to come together. I never really write with quote; ‘romance’ in mind. When I submitted to Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Vol.1, I knew that Rachel Kramer Bussel was after stories featuring character who were unique and authentic. Characters who were determined to go after their desires. “The Carnalarium” is the story of two women figuring out how to let each other go and still be happy. The inspiration behind my lead character, Beth, actually comes from something that my Mother-in-Law said one night after a family wedding. She said that she planned to walk across the entire U.S., from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast. On foot.

After my initial shock and then excitement for her, a seed germinated in my creative brain. I wondered if I could take that adventurous spirit of my Mother-in-Law one step further and write from the point of view of an independent, free-spirited female character who was more driven to spend her time on earth freely traveling it, without the burden of anything or anyone tying her down. This character’s life would be like a moving thing in and of itself, rather than the typical one spent searching for the perfect someone to be attached to.

Love and desire can be contextually synonymous. And don’t we desire to be loved and love to be desired? And, certainly, love can sneak up on us, unknowingly ensnare us. What happens when desire is stronger than love? Tough choices have to be made, and as the song goes, ‘breaking up is hard to do”, especially if you find you aren’t the one really in control.
